Anhyzer cup results

Write up from saturday by steve kornmuler:

In a hastily organised event Matt Cutler and Mark Fleetham's young and enthusiastic Bristol Disc Golf Club made the three hour journey to Croydon's Lloyd Park to meet the Essex Crew in the first leg for the first ever Anhyzer Cup event. The Essex Club who only had to travel 90 minutes for this their 'home leg' had one late cancelation but that just made a great excuse for one of Bristol's two Ladies to come join up to even things out. :D
With eight a side and the team photo completed by one of the many generous Croydon folks in Rich Wood. We then sorted out the teams in a random blind draw as per usual and got under way on a cold but very mild day as the layers started to come off during that morning Doubles Round.
No handicapping was done yet even though Bristol was sporting six players of eight players on their squad who had been playing only three months or less. Essex of course dominated and threw in a mild upset when Stoddart & Waxman team thwarted what seemed like a sure point for Bristol's Cutler & Fleetham tandem to a draw. Stoddart dominated with Waxman nailing an insane 70 footer to help get that point split.

Kornmuller/THamilton over Talan&Lucy 7 & 2 ESX (this match was at 2 & 1 for a long time, watch out for Talan & Lucy, great form and really good golfers!!! Talan is an Ultimate player and was crushing his Buzzz all over the place while Lucy's forehand with an Eclipse was starting to scare me with it's pin point accuracy and distance!)
CMontague/CPhillips over Nick Ayling/Mark 9 & 0 ESX
Cutler/Fleetham split w/ Stoddart/Waxman 1/2pts Each
Poole/Eagle over RHopper/RHamilton 9 & 0 ESX

Essex Blades 3.5
Bristol Rovers .5

So on to lunch and discussion of handicapping for those six newbies. I first balked at Matt's suggestion of a throw a hole but then realised that that was just a great challenge for the Essex golfers and it was agreed that Seeds 3 thru 7 would receive a throw per hole from Essex during the Singles Round. Besides we're all out here to bring out the new golfers right? Right then! Example on hole 12 when I birdied and Rob Hamilton parred, we pushed the hole since my birdie becomes a par, etc, etc.
This made it very tough as Matt and Mark have taught these rookies well and it was struggle for most of the Essex crew to pull away nay take any kind of an advantage. The two Bristol Ladies(well Tracey who played for Essex is from Basington-Stoke where husband Rob has a little course there just waiting to be discovered by that community) did not give any throws in the number 8 seed.

1) Cutler over Poole 2 & 0 BRT
2) Eagle over Fleetham 4 & 3 ESX
3) Richard Hopper over C.Montague 2 & 1 BRT
4) Nick Ayling over Stoddart 3 & 2 BRT
5) Talan over C.Phillips 9 & 1 BRT !!!
6) Rob Hamilton split w/Kornmuller 5 & 5 1/2pt each
7) Waxman over Mark 3 & 2 ESX
8) Lucy over Tracey Hamilton 9 & 6 BRT

On the last two holes of the entire day as our group scrambled to finish in twilight's last gleaming Kornmuller managed to even up the match with Hamilton on the trade mark hole's of Squeeky Bum Causeway and Stairway to Heaven where Rob unfortunetly went O.B. to Kornmuller's birdie. That giving up a throw every hole was really a daunting task, especially on the shorter Par 3's and I think that really tested the outlook for a few of Essex's finest. We'll know for next time!!! 8)
Wow, what a way to finish the event and I'm really glad to have met and played with all those new players from Bristol. Looks like `Matt has built something really great there and it will only continue to grow as will hopefully the Anhyzer Cup!!!

Doubles Tally
Bristol Rovers 5.5
Essex Blades 2.5

Final 1st leg @ Croydon

Essex Blades 6.0
Bristol Rovers 6.0

Tied after the first leg?
Smashing!
It doesn't get anymore square than that does it? Job done to the two new Firms!!!

2nd Leg possibilities being discussed are the Sunday after Bristol's One Day-er on January 20th(Matt's one day-er is Saturday the 19th) and the Friday before the 2013 Whitcombe Classic 20 & 21 July. If you register for the 2013 Bristol Open before 13 January, 2013 you get a free entry into Matt's One Day'er on 19 January, see his link here: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1483

Big HUGE thanks to Sam Stevens, the Croydon Lion Hearts, Jon Tweed and the Quarry Park Rangers for letting us piggy back onto their longstanding event.
Only problem we saw as we discussed the day's events on the drive home was that we all missed out on hanging out before, during and after with our counterparts playing the Hyzer Cup since we never finished at the same times and of course didn't get to play with them. :(

Well we can worry about that later and just as the 6 Nations Cup was once the 5 Nations Cup we now have started our way to the 4 Nations DG Cup!!! Who knows, in 5 or 10 years we all could be playing each other if we can work this right???

:D
